⚠️ Is $SOL Truly Decentralized? Infrastructure Concentration Raises Questions
A recent network incident highlighted a risk that goes beyond code and consensus rules: validator infrastructure can still have hidden points of concentration.
A routing problem at a major data-center provider temporarily disrupted a significant portion of Solana’s validator infrastructure. Reports indicated that roughly 29% of staked SOL was affected, with around 90 validators impacted across multiple regions.
The service issue was resolved relatively quickly, but some validators did not immediately switch to backup connections, extending the disruption for certain nodes.
The bigger takeaway isn’t simply that Solana experienced downtime.
It’s this:

Geographic distribution ≠ infrastructure independence.
You can have validators spread across Miami, London, Frankfurt, Singapore, Tokyo and other locations, but if many of them ultimately depend on the same data-center, network operator, or autonomous system, the network may still carry a hidden concentration risk.
That creates an important question for every major blockchain:
🔹 How many validators exist?
🔹 How much stake do they control?
🔹 How many depend on the same infrastructure providers?
🔹 Are backup routes actually independent?
🔹 What happens when a major provider goes offline?
True decentralization isn’t just about counting nodes.
It’s about how independent those nodes really are.
