The Fed's July Call: Why the Wording Matters More Than the Decision
The Fed drops its rate decision at 18:00 UTC today, and Chair Warsh takes the podium for his first press conference. CME FedWatch has no-change at 69.5%, a 25bp hike at 30.5%. That split alone tells you how confused the macro picture is right now.
What makes July genuinely unusual: Bank of America flagged that the Fed hasn't hiked with market odds below 60% since 1994. A move today would be unprecedented by that measure. TD Securities is calling a hold with two hawkish dissents, which sends its own signal without pulling the trigger.
The backdrop isn't giving anyone a clean read either. Consumer confidence dropped to 90.8, squarely in dovish territory. But oil just rebounded on fresh geopolitical strikes, handing hawks a live inflation argument. Both signals are real. Neither is decisive.
Here's what I keep coming back to: the Fed scrapped its forward guidance, so the statement text becomes the only anchor markets have. Warsh's first presser is where the real communication happens, and every word gets parsed.
A hold with hawkish language could move markets harder than a hike with a soft follow-up. Watch the wording, not the headline.
