CryptoQuant data shows that BTC which hasn't moved for over 10 years has reached 3.56 million coins, accounting for 17.7% of the circulating supply, a historic high. In the past 30 days, new coins have continued to "lie dormant" entering this range. What does this mean? Roughly 1 out of every 5 to 6 bitcoins hasn't moved in a decade, most likely due to lost private keys or forgotten wallets, effectively disappearing from the market. Additionally, with the current circulating supply at 20.07 million coins and less than 930,000 coins left to be mined before reaching the 21 million cap, the supply side is contracting from both ends. Industry estimates suggest that 10%-20% of bitcoins are permanently lost, with Chainalysis previously estimating a range of 17%-23%. By this calculation, the actual circulating amount is much less than the on-chain numbers. The scarcity story is not fabricated; it is recorded transaction by transaction on the blockchain. But don’t just look at the bullish side—August saw a clear acceleration in activity from old wallets, with over a thousand dormant coins activated in the first 10 days, surpassing the entire month of July. Some coins from 2014, which cost just over $800, have now surged nearly 8000%—Galaxy Research observed that on August 10-11, several wallets from early 2014 moved 114 BTC, with an average cost of $814, yielding a 7746% return. If these coins are sold, it will be real selling pressure. Long-term dormancy plus staking-induced deflation supports prices, but short-term awakening of old coins is real selling pressure. $BTC at 63,000 and $ETH at 1900 are stuck in limbo; it all depends on how much premium the market is willing to pay for structural scarcity.
