NVIDIA spent $21 billion to become a SpaceX shareholder, losing $4 billion in a month—should we be happy or worried? On August 14, NVIDIA filed its 13F with the SEC for the first time disclosing its holdings—as of June 30, it held about 122.8 million Class A shares of SpaceX, with a quarter-end market value of approximately $21 billion. According to FactSet data, NVIDIA is the sixth largest shareholder of SpaceX. Elon Musk himself firmly holds first place with $850 billion, and Alphabet ranks second with $78 billion. But note a key detail: this $21 billion was not recently bought by NVIDIA on the secondary market. Insiders revealed that NVIDIA’s SpaceX shares originated from its roughly $10 billion investment in xAI in January this year. In February, SpaceX acquired xAI at a $1.25 trillion valuation, and the investment was converted into SpaceX shares accordingly. In other words, NVIDIA didn’t bottom-fish; the shares initially invested in xAI were "forcibly converted" into SpaceX stock. Now, let’s talk about what SpaceX has been through recently. On June 12, SpaceX was listed at $135. On the third day, it surged to a historic high of $225. Then what? It went straight down. On August 5, SpaceX plummeted 13.61%, closing at $108.27. On August 3, it hit a new low of $104.83. From $225 to $104, it was a direct 50% cut. Until the past few days—Musk announced "AI revenue will surpass all other businesses in September," and "AI will account for 99% of the company’s value within five years," plus the release of Grok 4.6, the stock rebounded to around $146. But even so, it’s still down 37% from the $225 peak. NVIDIA’s $21 billion holding was calculated at $170.86 per share at the end of June. Now SpaceX closed at $140, meaning nearly $4 billion evaporated on paper. So here’s the question: if you are an SPCX holder and NVIDIA is the sixth largest shareholder—should you be happy or worried? My conclusion: short term is pressure, long term could be a moat. First, short-term pressure—why it might still fall. 1. NVIDIA itself has motivation to reduce holdings. The position shrank from $21 billion to $17.2 billion, with a nearly $4 billion unrealized loss. Any institution facing such a large floating loss would reassess its position. Don’t think NVIDIA is a "long-term value investor"—it’s a public company with its own financial reporting pressures. 2. SpaceX’s technical chart hasn’t stabilized yet. From $225 down to $104, rebounded to $146, but still 37% below the high. Whether $140 can hold is unknown. Whether the $104 low on August 3 will be retested is a real question. 3. Concerns about capital expenditure haven’t disappeared. SpaceX’s Q2 AI-related capital expenditure was $15.83 billion, total capex $18.37 billion—more than twice its revenue. The burn rate hasn’t slowed, so the market won’t stop questioning. Now, long-term value—why it might be an opportunity. 1. NVIDIA is the world’s most knowledgeable company about computing power value. It put real money (though not directly bought) into a $21 billion position, becoming the sixth largest shareholder. If it didn’t believe in SpaceX’s AI prospects, it would have tried to reduce holdings during the conversion. 2. The exclusive chip supply agreement locks out competitors. Musk clearly stated on the earnings call that SpaceX’s AI data centers will fully adopt NVIDIA chips, calling its GPUs the "best architecture." Musk also expects to receive a "large allocation" of NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs next year. AMD can’t even get in the door. 3. If Musk’s vision is realized, the current market cap is just the starting point. SpaceX plans to reach 10 gigawatts of AI computing power by the end of next year. At $30 to $50 per watt, that corresponds to annual revenue of $300 billion to $500 billion. The current market cap is only about $1.85 trillion—if this goal is half achieved, the valuation would double. Goldman Sachs just raised its 12-month target price from $205 to $220. Citi sees a long-term target above $900. NVIDIA’s $21 billion stake in SpaceX is not to be a "bag holder"—it’s to be an "accelerator." But accelerators have both gas and brakes. Which side it leans on depends on whether Musk can turn the 10 gigawatt vision into real cash flow. Operational reference (just the essentials): Short-term traders: watch if $140 can hold. If it breaks, the early August low of $104 will likely be retested. Don’t rush to bottom-fish; let the market stabilize first. Long-term investors: focus on two indicators—AI business revenue growth and computing power build-out progress. These are the core catalysts for valuation re-rating. As long as these two exceed expectations, short-term fluctuations are just noise. Position management: don’t go all in. SpaceX’s volatility is there—from $225 to $104 in less than two months. Build positions in batches and keep cash ready for extreme opportunities.
